2. That Day When Everything Felt Wrong

It was December. The cold Delhi winds were biting my face. I had stepped out for some work. But something was different inside me that day – a restlessness, an emptiness.

Have you ever felt like you are just walking but not reaching anywhere? Like life is moving, but something is missing? I was feeling something similar.

A few of my plans had failed recently. Some hopes were broken. And the biggest thing – I felt I was alone. Even in a crowd.

And then… something happened that I never expected.

3. An Encounter with a Stranger

I stopped at a small tea stall. It was cold, and I felt like having tea. A few people were standing there. I ordered tea and stood to the side.

Then an elderly gentleman arrived. He looked around 65–70 years old. Short in height, white beard, a cap on his head. Simple but very clean clothes. He carried an old bag.

He looked at me and smiled. Just a simple, ordinary smile.

I ignored him the way we often ignore strangers. But he started talking to me.

He said – “Son, are you sad too?”

I was surprised. How could a stranger read my mental state so easily? I said – “No, just like that…”

He smiled again and said – “Son, I am 68 years old. I have lost my wife. My son lives in America. I live alone. But I am not sad. Want to know why?”

4. What He Said Changed My Thinking Forever

I fell silent. There was something in his words that grabbed my attention.

He said – “In life, there are two kinds of people – one who see the circumstances, and one who see the possibilities. I lost my wife, but I have 40 years spent with her. My son is far away, but he is successful and he loves me. I am alone, but loneliness is an opportunity – to meet myself.”

I asked – “But how do you stay so positive?”

He replied – “This is not positivity, son. This is understanding. Understanding that everything is temporary. Sorrow is temporary, happiness is also temporary. So instead of drowning in sorrow, it is better to accept the moment and move forward.”

Then he took out a small diary from his bag. In it, he had written 3 things every day that he was grateful for – a small habit, but so powerful.

5. What That Encounter Taught Me

After that day, I asked myself some questions:

First – Am I able to see the things I already have?Or am I only seeing what I don’t have?

Second – Can I learn something from every situation?

This old man was happy even in his loneliness. Meanwhile, I – who had everything – was sad.

Third – Am I ready to learn from strangers?
We often think that learning happens only from elders or gurus. But real learning is hidden in everyday life.

That one meeting made me realise that gratitude is the greatest power. When you are thankful for what you have, what you don’t have stops bothering you.

6. Priceless Lessons from Unexpected Strangers

Often we think that big seminars or books are what change our lives. But the truth is:

Sometimes the greatest teachers are the most unknown people

I never even asked that elderly man his name. No phone number, no address. But his words settled into my mind like a mantra.

So can we learn from such people? Absolutely!

· The tea seller at the railway station: He earns barely 100 rupees, yet he is happy

· The auto rickshaw driver: Works 12 hours, yet welcomes every passenger with a smile

· That stranger who gives up his seat in the metro: A small act, but you see humanity in it

Every person is a story. Every meeting is a chance – to learn, to change, to understand.

7. How You Can Also Recognise Such People

If you are wondering why such random encounters don’t happen with you, maybe it’s because you aren’t paying attention.

So here are 3 simple ways:

🔹 Stay open-minded – When you wear earphones or stay glued to your phone, you cut yourself off from the world around you. Put your phone down sometimes. Look around.

🔹 Ask questions – If a stranger wants to talk, give them a chance. You never know what lesson they carry for you.

🔹 Listen without judging – Not everything will match your thinking. Just listen. Understand. Challenge your own perspective.

8. Conclusion: Life is a School

It has been three years since I met that elderly gentleman. I don’t clearly remember his face, but his words are still with me.

Every morning, I write down 3 things I am grateful for. It’s a small habit, but it changed my life.

So from today, you too can try this – whenever you meet a stranger, look for a lesson in them. That lesson might become the biggest strength of your life.

Because, as I learned – Life is a school, and every person is a teacher.
